PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE GOLDEN MUSSEL IN THE WATER SYSTEMS OF PLANTS AND INDUSTRIES OF THE MERCOSUR.

The problems caused by this species are similar to those described for the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha in the Northern Hemisphere. When larvae of the golden mussel enter water systems designed for potabilization, refrigeration, fire protection systems, etc. and settle and grow there, they cause:

  • Reduction of the section of piping.

  • Blocking of pipes.
  • Reduction of the flux speed due to friction loses (turbulent fluxes).
  • Accumulation of empty shells and pollution of the waterways in case of massive mortality because of inadequate control treatments.
  • Filter occlusion.
  • Increased surface corrosion due to settlements.
